The Ultimate Guide to Klondike Solitaire
Klondike Solitaire is a game of patience, strategy, and skill. The objective is to move all 52 cards into the four Foundation piles, organized by suit from Ace to King.
1. The Game Layout
Before you begin, it helps to understand the four main areas of the board:
- The Tableau: The seven columns that make up the main body of the game. Cards are moved here to reveal face-down cards and build sequences.
- The Foundations: Four empty slots at the top right where you build your final piles by suit (starting with an Ace).
- The Stock: The pile of remaining cards at the top left. You draw from here when you have no more moves on the Tableau.
- The Waste: Cards drawn from the Stock are placed here. Only the top card of the Waste pile can be played.
2. Rules of Movement
To succeed, you must master the rules of moving cards between columns and piles:
- Tableau Sequencing: You can place a card on another if it is exactly one rank lower and of the opposite color. For example, a Black 7 (Clubs or Spades) can only be placed on a Red 8 (Hearts or Diamonds).
- Moving Sequences: You can move entire stacks of cards if they follow the descending, alternating color rule.
- Empty Columns: Only a King (or a sequence starting with a King) can be moved into an empty space on the Tableau.
- Foundation Building: Foundations must begin with an Ace. Cards of the same suit are then placed on top in ascending order (Ace, 2, 3... King).
3. Winning Strategy Tips
- Expose Face-Down Cards: Priority should always be given to moves that reveal face-down cards in the Tableau.
- Don't Empty a Spot Too Soon: Unless you have a King ready to move into an empty column, keeping your existing cards spread out can offer more flexibility.
